Prifio Accessibility Statement
This is a draft
Version 0.3 · 2026-10-07 · Status: Draft for founder review
0.3: the child's world — the scenery can be stopped, replay offers only what has been recorded, and three more known limitations; the time limits said as they are — none on the child's side, and on the guardian's and staff's pages the few there are for security, each with its length; and the number of pages pa11y scans.
Prifio is a trading name of SectorSMART Ltd — see the Privacy Notice for full company details. Statement prepared 2026-07-27.
We're not a public sector body, so the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations don't formally apply to us. We're committing to the same standard voluntarily, because it's the right thing to do for a product used by young children and by the parents and carers signing them up — some of whom will be using assistive technology themselves.
Our commitment
Every surface of Prifio — the child's world and the guardian's side of the product alike — is built to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA. That's a whole-product commitment, not a page-by-page one: it applies to whatever exists today, and to everything we add.
What exists today
Prifio today is a public landing page, the guardian's account pages (sign-up, sign-in, family, settings), and one journey of the child's world — a short Welsh-medium maths adventure.
What is tested automatically, by the project's own test suite:
- the landing page and every screen of the child's journey are scanned for WCAG 2.2 AA failures with axe; pa11y scans fourteen pages: those eight, the sign-in, sign-up and forgotten-password pages, and the three documents families are shown (the Privacy Notice, the Terms of Use and this statement);
- every control on every child screen is measured at five real tablet sizes, and the whole child journey runs again in Safari's engine on an emulated iPad;
- each child screen is announced to screen readers when it appears, and keyboard focus moves to its heading.
That suite is set up to run on every change automatically as soon as the code is published to its repository; until then it is run by hand before every change. Two things we committed to are not yet done: a keyboard-only walkthrough of each new surface, and a manual screen-reader pass by a person. They are listed as known limitations below until they are.
What we build to on the child's surface
Because part of Prifio is used directly by young children — including pre-readers — we hold the child-facing surface to some specific, concrete standards, in addition to WCAG 2.2 AA generally:
- Touch targets are at least 56 by 56 pixels.
- Nothing is conveyed by colour alone.
- Focus is always visible.
- Every control is a real button, so everything is built to be operable by keyboard — not yet confirmed by a keyboard-only walkthrough (see the known limitations).
- The scenery's gentle movement (drifting clouds, a bobbing bird, the river) can be stopped with a button on every screen where something moves; it stays still for the rest of that visit. The operating system's reduced-motion setting stops it altogether.
- Dryw's narration, once recorded, plays when each screen appears, can always be replayed, and can be switched off; that choice is remembered on the device. A screen offers to replay only what has been recorded. There is no music and there are no sound effects yet.
- Every picture has a short spoken description for screen-reader users.
- Built for pre-readers — the youngest band (Egin, ages 4–5) — but see the known limitations: until the narration is recorded, a grown-up needs to read with the child.
- There are no time limits on the child's side of Prifio.
Time limits on the grown-ups' side
The child's side has no time limits. The guardian's and staff's pages have a few, for security: they stop an account left signed in on a shared or lost device from being used by someone else, so they are essential, and cannot be turned off or made longer.
- A guardian is signed out after 12 hours without using Prifio, and 30 days after signing in.
- Before a sensitive action — setting up a device for the children, inviting a guardian, signing out your other devices, managing billing, downloading your data, deleting your account, or changing how you sign in — Prifio asks you to confirm it's you, if you last did that more than 10 minutes ago. Once you have, what you were doing carries on.
- Staff are signed out after 30 minutes without using Prifio, and 12 hours after signing in. The admin's own pages ask them to confirm it's them again every 15 minutes.
There is no warning before any of these.
Known limitations
Recorded honestly, and kept here until each is fixed:
- No narration yet. The recordings of Dryw's voice have not been made. Until they are, a child who cannot read needs a grown-up to read the words with them. The sound and replay controls are hidden until there is something to hear.
- No manual screen-reader pass yet, and no keyboard-only walkthrough — the automated checks above are not a substitute.
- The Welsh is awaiting its specialist review, including the descriptions of each picture that screen readers announce.
- No accessibility contact route is published yet (below).
- No portrait layout for the child's world. On a tablet held upright the valley is drawn smaller: every word in its cards and buttons stays at 14px or more, but the place names drawn into the picture (the signposts, such as "Y Neuadd" and "Yr Afon") are about 10 to 13px.
- Browser zoom enlarges the child's world only in a smaller window. Zooming makes it bigger when the zoomed window is narrower than about 720 CSS pixels or shorter than about 500 — a laptop at 200%, a phone, Split View. In a large window, such as a full-screen desktop monitor, the world fills the window at any zoom, so zoom does not enlarge it; making the window smaller, or zooming further, does.
- A mistyped address in the child's world shows a blank page until the page's code has loaded, then the sleeping valley. The page is correctly reported as not found; showing the Welsh page before the code loads would need the server to answer differently.
Welsh and English parity
Prifio's child-facing content is Welsh-led. Our commitment to accessibility applies equally in both languages — including correct lang attributes on every element, so screen readers announce Welsh and English content in the right voice and pronunciation, never guessed from context.
Feedback and contact
If you find anything in Prifio that's hard to use because of a disability, we want to know. (to be confirmed)
Enforcement
If you contact us and you're not happy with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS), which advises on accessibility and equality matters in England, Scotland and Wales. (to be confirmed)
This statement is reviewed at every milestone, not on a fixed calendar — so it never describes a version of Prifio that no longer exists.
Version log
| Version | Date | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1 | 2026-07-27 | Initial draft for founder review. |
| 0.2 | 2026-10-05 | Brought up to date with what is actually built and tested (2026-10 review, D-2): several 0.1 statements described plans as facts; they are corrected and recorded as known limitations. |
| 0.3 | 2026-10-07 | P7c (#45): the scenery's movement can be stopped with a button on every screen where something moves, and stays still for the rest of that visit (the operating system's reduced-motion setting stops it altogether); a screen offers to replay only what has been recorded, and the sound and replay controls are hidden until there is something to hear; three known limitations added: no portrait layout (the signposts drawn into the picture are about 10 to 13px on an upright tablet), browser zoom enlarging the child's world only in a smaller window, and a mistyped address in the child's world showing a blank page until the page's code has loaded. P7b: the time limits (WY-15) — it said there were none anywhere in Prifio; there are none on the child's side, and the guardian's and staff's pages sign people out, and ask them to confirm it's them, after the times now listed, for security, so they cannot be turned off or made longer, and without a warning; and pa11y scans fourteen pages, not eleven. |
